Our music programme is varied, dynamic and packed with opportunities; areas include instrumental study, aural training, chamber music, orchestral training, choral work and vocal study, composition and music technology.

All students have individual lessons on a principal and second study instrument (in some cases supplementary subjects, as well), accompanied by group lessons on supplementary subjects, ensemble, choir, orchestra etc.

Individual practice is also scheduled up alongside with group lessons until the senior form.Every year there are assessments to review progress and offer encouragement, guidance and advice on specified areas.

Units of Principal instruments

Piano

The list of former piano students of M.KČiurlionis School reads like a who's who of national and international performing artists, showing how the unit has proved to be of significant importance to the landscape of piano playing in Lithuania over the past six decades.

With about 145 students, a team of 30 teachers the piano unit is always focused, vibrant and supportive. It enjoys a particularly close relationship with the department of piano of Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy.

External engagements are of major importance to piano students in their educational and artistic development. Our piano students have enjoyed successes in many international competitions including Usti-nad-Labem Piano Competition (The Czech Republic), N.Rubinstein Competition in Paris (France), Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists (Germany), "XXI Century Art" Competition in Kiev(Ukraine), "Evangrlia Tjiari" (Cyprus), International Franz Liszt Cometition for Young Pianists as well as many nationwide competitions in Lithuania.

Collaborative music making is of big importance for piano students. Pianists enjoy collaborating with string and wind players for trios, quartets and quintets at chamber ensemble class.

The string instrument unit with 135 students and with over 25 teachers has enjoyed remarkable success at both national and international competition level over the last few years

There is a strong emphasis on developing students playing to the very highest possible technical level, whilst developing musical skills through performance opportunities, chamber music playing and orchestral repertoire.

The students have enjoyed remarkable success at both national and international competition level over the last few years including International Antonio Janigro Cello Competition (Croatia), "Remember Enescu" (Romania), Kazimierz Wilkomirski Youth Cello Competition in Poznan (Poland), Georg Phillip Telemann National Violin Competition in Poznan (Poland)

Wind Studies at the School

The wind instrument unit is a dynamic and thriving place for talented young woodwind and brass players.

We have around 60 woodwinds and over 20 brass students who follow a challenging and comprehensive programme implemented by over 20 teachers.

They have individual lessons to polish and build up a high technical ability, strong sense of creative imagination and performance experience.

The students have achieved nontheless remarkable successes at the international competitions such as Luxembourgeois et Europeen pour Jaunes Solistes (Luxembourgh) and International Competition memory of Mravinsky (woodwinds and brass) in St.Petersburg (Russia)

Choir singing and conducting

Almost ninety students have chosen choir as their major of musical studies

There is a strong emphasis on developing students skills in choir singing and choir conductin. There are three different choirs at the School 1and 2 grade choir, 3 and 5 grade choir and 6 and 12 grade choir. With the individual training of conducting skills students are involved in many projects as well at School and as all over the country nad abroad.

Chamber Music

The chamber music unit has developed a comprehensive and highly regarded chamber music programme with all instrumental students being allocated to one main chamber music group which receives weekly teaching.

Chamber Music programme is a key element in the education of our young musicians. Chamber music incorporates all the fundamental ensemble skills needed for life as a solo and orchestral musician, as well as honing more basic aspects of playing, such as intonation and rhythm.

We have a vibrant chamber music unit which enables students to work in different instrument Duos, Piano Trios, String Quartets, Wind and Piano Quintets.

Music Theory and Music History

The music theory and music history unit supports and extends each individual student's instrumental work throughout the school. It plays a vital role within the Music Department, teaching every student across all age ranges. It represents a core subject in the curriculum. The department works towards the closest possible integration of each student's academic and musical development.

Compulsory Piano

All students but the piano ones at Music Department have a compulsory piano tuition through the whole span of learning. The compulsory piano unit comprises of about thirty piano teachers.

Accompaniment

Piano students have a four-year accompaniment course beginning with Grade 9 where they have an opportunity to gain skills in both instrumental and vocal accompanying. The accompaniment unit brings together pianists, instrumentalist and vocalist to implement the syllabus.

Accompanist

Staff Accompanist Unit comprises of more than twenty professional pianists to accompany the individual instrumental and conducting classes, choir and string ensemble classes.

Masterclasses

The Music department programme of events calender includes various masterclasses both for students and for teachers.

The artists and pedagogues of international calibre such as Z.Bron, P.Geniušas, A.Fisher, M.Gaisler, N.Seriogina, T.Berkul, N.Jones etc visit and revisit the music department for masterclasses and this also shows the respect and admiration which the School's students continue to attract at the highest levels of the musical profession.
